Dinner= Pizza and Juice
Weight= 199.6
Weekly Goal= Run a consistent 12.49 mile and 4 times this week.
Coming back from the rez really threw me off. I was getting ready to run on Saturday when I realized that I forgot to pack my running shoes. That blew big time! Then when I got back I was so tired that I haven’t been getting up to run and I hate to run in the evening when it’s too hot and dirty. When I run in the evening I feel like I’m running in the desert.
My goal for the upcoming week is to begin to solidify my weekly running. Getting into the groove of running during the summer. Finding stuff to do during the summer will be the biggest challenge. Maybe I should do all that filing I’ve been meaning to get to.
This morning’s run had a good time for me but I felt so slow and I attribute that to my eating habits. I’ve been a slacker although in the past couple of days I have downed more water than usual. Good for me.
I really want to buy myself some yarn so I better put my booty into gear and get these runs done. I am also pledging to only eat dessert every other day. I’m not with child anymore so I can’t justify it.

Earl's Spirit
(05/27/2008)
The Physical This week was good overall. I worked out 5 days out of the week including a two mile run walk on Saturday. Who hoo! My calves continue to hurt, but I've been doing some research and have a plan to combat the issue. My achillies tendon makes itself known from time to time as well, but I am a man so I deal. Speaking of man, shout out to Amanda's beau, Nate, for coming and running with us. It was refreshing not to be the only dude!
The Nutritional This aspect of my regiment still needs work but I am making progress. I only ate after 8 once and I only drank 56 ounces of soda for the week. Unfortunately, as I write this status I have two cans of soda in my lunch pail and I am going to drink them :( The MoneyOn the financial front, I purchased a watch, some socks, and some shoes. My shoes will be in on friday, so on saturday I should be run/walking like the wind!!!!! Shwwwwwww (sound of the wind). I also bought a bike for some cross training action and as soon as I get another, more comfortable seat, the one I have is not booty friendly, I will be bicycling for the cause. Travelocity has plane tickets to Las Vegas for $114 round trip.
The Spirit By the by, it's been 4 weeks and I am still at a 10 out of 10 on the "Excited About the Marathon" o'meter. And my Motivation factor is solidly entrenched at 8 out of 10, running's hard!

MacKnitty Begins
Monday, May 19, 2008
Dinner= French Dip and French Fries
Weight= 199.6
Weekly Goal= Run a consistent 12.49 mile and 4 times this week.
1.81 miles, 11.45 min/mile PBM (personal best mile)
I really slacked off last week. I only got in 1 run plus the long run last week. I felt sluggish and I think I was missing the runner’s high and really grouchy.
Lately, my thoughts have been focused on my running group. I was thinking of incentives for perfect attendance and recognition for personal bests. I am really enjoying this aspect of my week. I feel like I’m doing good in the world.
I have been waiting for that point when your weekly runs are easy and you can get your heart rate up faster. Alas, I am still struggling with breathing easy and foot turnover. Not to mention that one of my fave running shorts are now too small? Too much baby belly?

5/17 No Pancakes Today
We have finally begun to build a routine and start some norms, namely the BEING ON TIME norm. We are a group of teachers and we tend to run on our own time so we've established that start time is at 7:30AM but if there are only 2 or 3 people there then we will wait until there are 5 people unless they've called MacKnitty to let us know they are coming.Our group is feeling good and excited about going to Vegas. Yuma Mama is hoping to persuade her hubby to come to Vegas with the new baby. I say do it! My baby also needs some company. Plus you want to celebrate afterwards and what better place than Vegas?
The big news this week is Chicka's hubby, Earl joining in on our long run. He pushed his middle son in the bike cart/stroller.Rascal and Chika's first born took the ambitious task of running and biking the full loop.
Yuma Mama and MacKnitty both completed a run/walk pace.
The group was in training mode this week and it was good time for all.
Discussion hovered around summer running and a possible earlier start time due to summer weather. Earl was having no part of it saying, "We'll cross that bridge when we get there."
IHOP is on the menu in 2 weeks for a post-run meal.
MacKnitty/Yuma: 12.35 min/mile, 1.5 miles, ATRfull-6 hours 44 minutes, ATRhalf- 3 hours 10 minutes
Dolce/CHIKA/Earl: 15.55 min/mile, 1.5 miles, ATRfull- 8 hours 31 minutes, ATRhalf- 4 hours
Rascal: 7.57 min/mile, 3 miles, ATRfull-4 hours 10 minutes, ATRhalf- 1 hour 53 minutes
5/10- The Running Path
After some relocating, we decided that the running path would work best for us.
Especially since, MacKnitty (group leader) figured out that CHIKA's baby stroller is not an all terrain vehicle.
I (MacKnitty) was feeling especially under the weather with allergies and some boob problems (breastfeeding) so we decided to walk the route. With my handy dandy NIKE+ system telling me our pace and distance. I was ready to turn around at the half way
point but we felt good so we walked the entire 3 mile loop at a brisk pace.
Little did we know that it would be an overexertion for many of us. MacKnitty was sore for 2 days.
PACE= 16.43 min/mile

Chronicles of Earl/Run Forrest Run
Operation 26.2 2008
My Name is Earl Shelby(Chicka Fila's husband). I am 35 years old, 5'8" tall (with shoes) 290 lbs (dry weight). Over the past decade, I've been assailed by responsibilities (job, children, wife, etc...), good living (great job, wonderful children, lovely wife, and amazing ecetera's ), and a lack of motivation when it comes to exercise and staying healthy.
About 2 years ago I had a friend run in his first marathon, and the thought of completing such a daunting task piqued my interest. Then about six months ago I had another friend complete her first marathon, and I wondered, "Is somebody's trying to tell me something?" Finally, my wife informed me of Tia plan to gather a team and run in the Las Vegas marathon, and I thought, "Well, you don't have to tell me twice!" So after mentally coming to terms with the physical effort needed to pedestrianate and or run for 26.2 miles, I accepted the challenge and then sat down and devised a 3 phase 2 pronged attack ( Engineers tend to over analyze at times) for successful completion of the Las Vegas Marathon.
Phase One - Bringing Sexy Back Make exercise a habit. I read somewhere it takes 30 days to make something a habit. So the first step is to commit to 30 days.Before I retired my Pimp Status, and when my Player's Card was still active (all of this is pre-Katrina of course:) ), I exercised every day. If I didn't work out my whole day felt wrong. Step two is to rekindle that magic, minus the pimp stuff of course. Although when I do bring sexy back the women are going to be all up on me, but Trina is just going to have to come to terms with that!
Phase Two - Getting Healthy Exercise is only one component to Operation 26.2 2008. Another major part is nutrition, and it will be the focal point of phase two. But don't be crazy! I am not about two wake up and start eating tofu and salads. Getting healthy is much more complicated than that. I like to eat and I like good food, junk food, and lots of food. So I'll break this phase into two levels. The first is to try and stop eating after six and definitely no solids after eight. I will also severely cut back on the soda's. Also in support of level one I will first focus on portion control. Instead of a double whopper w/cheese add bacon large combo, I'll just get a whopper w/cheese and some water (maybe a few fries). And I will gradually work towards throwing a salad in there somewhere.Exercise is critical to Phase two as well. Now that exercising is a habit, varying the types of physical activities will go a long way to staving off boredom and keeping you motivated.
Phase Three - Define Goals What is successful? Set "realistic" goals. Not only define the ultimate goal to cross the finish line after running/walking for 26.2 miles, but also set monthly, weekly, and even daily goal. December is a long way off. So use your goals to motivate and pace yourself, and you won't fail because you couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel or you lost sight of the ultimate objective.
So I boiled my 3 phased mission down into 3 keys to success for a quick motivation fill up:
1. Vary your training - Motivation will die in a vaccum of boredom.
2. Invest in your goals - Money Motivates. Tia alluded to this at one of the meetings. Investing capital will compel you to action. So I am buying a bike, some running shoes, a good watch, a pedometer, a heart rate monitor, some clothes, a headband and an external hard drive! 3. Partner for Success - If someone else is depending on you being there, you are more likely to go.
End of Week Status:
(05/02/2008)Operation 26.2 2008 got off to an inauspicious start this week. I only managed to work out 3 days out of the week and the effort was lacksadasical at best. That is all I have to say about that! (
05/09/2008)This week my efforts equalled my desire. I trained 5 days out of the week. I ran a total of 2 and one half miles and walked for 15 and a half miles over the course of the entire week. I also did some cross training which included some weight lifting and 1 hour on the elliptical machine. I had a lot of aches and pains and had to be extremely careful not to overdue it. My achillies tendon has been whuppin' my ass! I am also having to stretch my calves a lot more, and when I finish my half mile run, it feels like my lungs want to crack open my ribs and just leave! Unfortunately, the nutrition part was only half as successful. I manage to keep all my meals before 8 and the majority before 6 but I didn't cut back on the soda's as much as I would like. But I drank more water and juice.
(05/16/2008)One more week and it's a habit. I probably should say two more because of my poor performance the first week. Another 5 day week. I completed a 5 mile walk run in a little more than an hour which I figure will have to be my pace during the race. I was beat to hell though after I finished. I managed to gain a pound which was somewhat discouraging don't now how it happened, but it will not make me falter. The achillies tendon is finally starting to ease up after I sucked it up and started icing it down after exercising. My lungs are still rebelling, but my recovery time is much impoved. I completed 20 1/2 miles of combined running and walking for a total this week, and I really had to work hard to keep from over doing it. It's like I am having just a little gas left in the tank after I finish exercising and it's hard not to just burn it all up!

The Bios
Las Vegas Half-Marathon Hopeful
My name is Elizabeth, also known as Mrs. Flores, Bety, Betucha, Liz and now “Coco Brown”. I’m 36 years old (and proud), 5’7” and 165 lbs (not proud)! I’ve been teaching for 8 years and prior to teaching, I was a Probation Officer with PCJCC for 6 years. I won the Powerball when I married my wonderful, athletic, handsome, cool, hard-working husband ten years ago, and I am the proud mother of two handsome, smart, wonderful, funny, adventurous, VERY mischievous boys who drive me crazy, but that I ADORE!!! Of the entire group I believe to be the most non-athletic. The closest I have been to being an athlete is when I tried to play softball when I was in elementary. As for working out… does waking up at 7:30am in the summer to catch the “20 Minute Workout” on PBS count? Oh yeah… I’ve done a several walks (never runs) for Diabetes, Cancer, March of Dimes, Komen Race for the Cure, and the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Like many, I too have my list of “things to do before I die.” One of the things on my list is running (walking) a marathon. When Tia sent out her e-mail inviting us to join her in the Vegas Marathon I took it as a sign. The first thing that caught my attention and was the motivator for me to sign up immediately, was that the marathon was going to be in VEGAS! Those that know me know that I go to Vegas 4-6 times a year. I love the energy there!
I’ve been fighting the “battle of the bulge” for eight years now. I’ve heard Dr. Oz enough on Oprah to know that I’m at a point in my life that I NEED to lose weight and I need to lose it PRONTO! I’m the heaviest I have ever been without being pregnant, and I don’t think I can use the “it’s baby fat” excuse anymore considering my youngest is almost SIX! I believe training for this marathon will help me lose the weight and really help me pave the way for a healthy (both physical and mental) lifestyle. Completing this ½ marathon is not only a goal, but has become a challenge. Every time I tell someone in my family that I am doing a marathon I get the same response… “Shut up!” “Yeah right!” or “Whatever!” Now I MUST do it, I have to prove to them that I have what it takes to do this! This is where my optimism, competitiveness, stubbornness and oppositional defiance will work for me! I have the courage to start and I WILL do it! I am looking forward to training and living healthy lifestyle! I pray for discipline, endurance and perseverance, because I know that for the Lord NOTHING is impossible and believe me… I NEED all the help I can get! Thank you fellow marathoners for your support and doing this together! Thank you Tia (a.k.a. MacKnitty) for the invitation to an experience that can change our lives forever! May this be the first of many life changing journeys and accomplishments together!
Si Se Puede!!!

Greetings!My nickname is Hellfire Heidi. I am a Tucson native and have hiked, backpacked, mountain biked, rock climbed and horseback ridden all over Southern Arizona. Being outdoors is my passion. However, I have never, ran before. During high school and college I was a modern dancer and have always been athletic.
Running on the other hand has always scared me. Thanks to my friend I work with, I have been inspired to run a half marathon next December!!! I have always had knee problems and consider myself an "inflexible" person even though I practice yoga and Pilates periodically.
So, this is a big challenge for me. I am ready to practice, enjoy the journey ahead, and focus my energy on finishing! My friends and co-workers are so supportive. This blog will be a great outlet for both positive and negative experiences leading up to the race. My fiance (he did the Grand Canyon rim to rim!) and my friends have run marathons so, I am in good company!
Let the journey begin!

MacKnitty has been teaching for 7 years and a runner for 4-5 years. I have successfully completed several 5K, 10K and a half marathon at a steady 12.15 minute pace. At the tender age of 27, I had my first baby girl. I enjoy reading, blogging (I especially like to publish blogs with many grammatical and spelling errors and a plethora of parenthesis), knitting and chatting about life with close friends (sometimes I try to do all of them at once with little success). My desert island must haves would be my iPod with an endless power source, two stranded shipmates Mom and husband, knitting needles and a never ending supply of top of the line yarn. My favorite time of day is early morning when it’s just you and road with your thoughts. I am running to have something exciting to talk about at my 10 year high school reunion.

I guess you could say that I’m pretty new at this whole “athlete” thing. While I participated in school-sponsored sports in grade school, I was by no means athletic. I loved the competitive and social aspects of the sports I played, but I disliked the training aspect—especially running. Running was used as punishment, so I quickly learned to dislike it. In fact, I soon became the middle schooler who faked sick on the day of the physical fitness test mile run, just to get out of it. I was the middle schooler, who when faced with having to make up that missed mile, chose to “protest” it by walking the entire thing. Running and I have had a hate-hate relationship ever since.
While in college, my Hall Director completed her first triathalon through Team in Training. I was intrigued by her training schedule, endurance, and desire to succeed! While I was intrigued, I was not ready to undertake such a feat myself. It took a few more years before I finally had the guts to sign up for the Team in Training information packet. It arrived in the mail and I eagerly signed up for an information session only to chicken out, three times. I would have every intention of attending the sessions, only to freak out on the day of the session and drive home because I thought that I didn’t have it in me to complete any type of race. There was always an excuse—I was too heavy, too out of shape, I had bad knees, it was the wrong time…
So, when MacKnitty sent out a school-wide invitation to join her in a training group for the Las Vegas marathon, I knew I had to give it a shot. There were no more excuses; I’ve recently lost weight, been walking regularly, and I’m healthier…it IS the right time and I couldn’t be more excited for what this journey has in store!

Hola, my name is Ivonne. I am in a time in my like where I feel the need to change, the need to progress, the need to get to that next step in life. I had been working hard on finishing my administrative certificate as well as my reading endorsement and have finally accomplished my goal. I have 2 adorable children and a very handsome husband. They are truly my driving force! I could not have done it without them!
Back in junior high (gosh…. these words are going to give my age away…..better known as middle school) I was very athletic. I was a cheerleader, I played basketball, and I ran cross country and track. As the years progressed my interests veered to clubs (no not night clubs..well not yet anyway) I was in every club you can name. Losing my interest in physical exercise brought upon a few pounds (not much) but more than anything, it brought stress and fatigue. I feel that physical activity is a great way to relieve stress. As a married mother of two with a heavy post graduate course load, I feel that I have not given myself “MY TIME”. I have been living for my family and will continue to so BUT, I know that I need to make room for ME!
AND THIS IS WHY I AM HERE!!! Running/walking a half marathon is one of my first steps. Not only will I get fit but I will accomplish one of the 2 things that I wanted to accomplish before I died…. Going on a game show and running a marathon. As for the game show, I still have hopes. As for the marathon, I have full control. I loved Tia’s motivation card that stated- “The miracle is not that I finished the race, it is that I decided to start.” I am actually going to do!!!! I get butterflies every time I see a marathon on TV. I am afraid of being swept by the street cleaners never to be found! If I practice and get in shape, I might avoid that. Having the right support is definitely key. Going through this alone would have been harder, but having friends doing this with me will be a great experience!
