The Journey Begins

It all began with an email:

Long email ahead! Here's the quick and dirty:

There are 2 things in my life that have made me feel like I am capable of doing anything in the world.. running a half marathon and giving birth.

Since I can't offer you the chance to give birth how about the alternative? A half or full marathon?

I would love some training buddies for the Las Vegas Marathon in December.

Some FAQs:

How far is a marathon? 26.2 miles
Umm, yeah like I'm going to run that far! How about a half marathon? 13.1 miles

Do I have to run the whole thing? No, but it gets you there faster. I do a 3 minute run and 1 minute walk race.

Yeah but MacKnitty will be so much faster than me. How fast do you have to be? Not fast at all. The running community has changed and openly accept all levels of runner. I am one of the slow runners of the community. I run at about a 12-13 minute a mile pace.

How fast is that? I am not really sure but that's a slow pace. I finish in the back of the pack.

Does it take a long time? Not at the beginning. At the beginning you run for as long as you can. For me, that was 1 minute and then I thought my heart would explode. Right now I run for 12 minutes every other morning.

Slowly I could run longer and longer. Around 1.5 months I was about to run 3-4 miles regularly in 30-40 minutes. For the training runs on the weekends you get into longer time periods like my 10 mile run was 2 hours long.

BUT YOU ONLY DO TRAINING RUNS ON THE WEEKEND so I only had to run 10 miles on 1 weekend.

Still not buying it and you're nuts.

I am not a fitness fanatic or a super runner my any means. When I first tackled the half marathon I was 30 pounds overweight, a social smoker and drinker. Training for the half didn't help me lose weight but it kept my butt from jiggling when I walked. I did quit smoking and cut down on the number of drinks I had in social situations. I also felt so much heathier.

So you don't have to give up a glass of wine now and then or (now and now) but your body is amazing! On the day before a run- after a night of steak and wine you will feel like a slug and the run will be brutal but on the night of chicken and veggies and a glass of water you will feel like a 21 year old cheerleader (maybe that's too far but you get my drift).

Here's my thinking the week after AIMS and TerraNova we have a little meeting in my room for people who are interested in at least attempting it and learning more about the process. Stew on it for a week okay? Just think about it.
